Coastal Flood Warning Issued Along New Jersey Shore as Hurricane Erin Brushes Offshore

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J., Aug. 20, 2025 - A Coastal Flood Warning is now in effect for New Jersey’s coastal areas. This includes Cape May and Atlantic counties. The warning comes as the outer bands of Hurricane Erin approach the coast. The warning lasts from 5:00 p.m. tonight to 2:00 a.m. Saturday. The highest flood risk will be during the high tides on Thursday evening.
Residents in low-lying oceanfront and bayside areas should take note. Tides may rise one to two feet above ground level. This could lead to flooding along shorelines and tidal waterways. Roadways in coastal towns could become impassable, and vulnerable structures may sustain damage. Peak flooding is expected near the Townsend’s Inlet Bridge at about 7:39 p.m. on Thursday. Tides could hit 6.5 feet above mean lower low water in parts of Cape May County.
Expect ocean waves between 10 and 17 feet. Northeast winds will be 25–35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph. These conditions will lead to dangerous waters and a high risk of rip currents until Friday. Beachgoers and boaters should follow all beach patrol orders. Stay out of the surf and secure any outdoor items. Drivers must never try to go through flooded roads. Closures often happen at high tide.
County officials reinforce that preparations should begin immediately. ““If you live in a low-lying area prone to flooding, please take the appropriate precautions now. Move your vehicles to higher ground and secure outdoor furniture,” said Cape May County Commissioner Director Len Desiderio.
Local emergency management will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates. Residents can visit the National Weather Service website for more info. They can also follow the Cape May County Office of Emergency Management on social media for updates.
