KJ Apa Names Riverdale Costar as Son’s Godfather

Moata’a, Samoa - In a special interview on August 21, 2025, actor KJ Apa shared that his Riverdale co-star Charles Melton will be the godfather of his 3-year-old son, Sasha. Apa, who shares Sasha with his ex, Clara Berry, said Melton was there when Berry gave birth in 2021. It “felt natural” to ask him to take on that role.

Apa, 28, talked to People magazine about the unique bond he formed over seven seasons on the hit CW show. ““Charles was in the delivery room when Clara gave birth. He’s been a part of our lives ever since,” the Riverdale alum explained. ““He’s a great friend and someone I trust to guide Sasha.”

The actor shared his personal challenges after Riverdale ended in 2023. ““When I finished that show, I spent a year trying to find myself again,” Apa said. He linked fatherhood and his breakup with Berry to his journey of self-discovery. “Being a dad, facing a breakup, and piecing myself back together… it was a whirlwind.”

Despite those trials, Apa said he is grateful for every experience that led him to this point. ““I asked for this life, and I’m grateful for it,” he said. He pointed to the joy of fatherhood and the support of his close circle, including Melton, as his sources of strength.
