PS5 Price Hike, New Game Release and Cloud Streaming Update Announced on August 20, 2025

Los Angeles, CA – August 20, 2025 – Sony Interactive Entertainment announced three big updates for PlayStation 5 today. These include hardware pricing, game availability, and cloud features.

Sony announced a $50 price increase for all PS5 hardware in the U.S. starting August 21. The standard PlayStation 5 with a disc drive will go up from $499 to $549. The PS5 Digital Edition will increase from $449 to $499. The high-end PS5 Pro will rise from $699 to $749. In a PlayStation Blog post, Isabelle Tomatis, SIE’s global marketing VP, said the U.S. will see changes due to “a challenging economic environment.” For now, accessories will stay the same.

In software news, Square Enix’s tactical RPG Triangle Strategy is now out on PS5 for $59.99. It first launched on Nintendo Switch in 2022. PlayStation Plus members can redeem a 30% discount-bringing the price to $41.99-through September 4 at 2:59 a.m. ET. The title has received praise for its branching story. It takes place during the tensions in Norzelia after the Saltiron War.

Sony’s PS Portal, a handheld streaming device, got an update for its cloud streaming beta. PS Plus Premium subscribers can stream Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. They don’t need to turn on a PS5. This adds to Portal’s library, which now includes titles like Cyberpunk 2077. The duration of this catalog access remains unspecified.

A new Sony patent hints at a PCIe-based dev kit. This could make PS5 game development easier. Developers might simulate console hardware on desktop PCs or remote servers. Studios around the world could work on PlayStation titles at the same time. They wouldn’t need to ship any special development kits.
