Defending Champion Sara Errani Advances to U.S. Open Mixed Doubles Final

NEW YORK (August 21, 2025) – Italian doubles pro Sara Errani teamed up with Andrea Vavassori. They achieved a solid 4-2, 4-2 win over Americans Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison in the U.S. Open mixed doubles semifinal at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday. Errani and Vavassori won their seventh straight match in New York. This victory secured their spot in the championship. They will defend their 2024 title against third seeds Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud later tonight.
The Italian duo was given a wildcard entry as part of a format change meant to draw in top singles stars. They dominated in both their service and return games. Errani and Vavassori had an impressive 76% win rate on first serves. They saved all three break points against them and converted 50% of their break chances. These stats highlight their skill as doubles specialists.
After winning the semifinal, Vavassori said, “We feel on a mission.” He echoed Errani’s earlier point about the tournament focusing on singles rankings instead of established doubles teams. The defending champions were unsure at first about joining. However, they’ve shown resilience and teamwork during the event. They refuse to let the new format hold them back.
Later Wednesday night, Errani and Vavassori will take on Swiatek and Ruud. It’s a best-of-three-set final. The winners will earn a $1 million prize. If the Italians win, they will be the first team to repeat as U.S. Open mixed doubles champions since Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jamie Murray did in 2018–19.
