Chelsea Playmaker Cole Palmer Ruled Out of Match After Warm-Up Injury

LONDON (Aug. 22, 2025) - Chelsea’s attacking midfielder Cole Palmer withdrew from Friday’s Premier League game at West Ham United. He picked up an injury while warming up.

Just before kick-off at the London Stadium, Palmer left the pitch. He was replaced in the Blues’ starting lineup by Brazilian teenager Estêvão Willian. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said they are still assessing Palmer’s injury. They decided to hold him out of the match as a precaution.

Palmer, 23, was ready to start his third Premier League game in a row. This followed a goalless draw with Crystal Palace on the first weekend. Photos from the tunnel showed him sitting on a bench in a long coat. This may mean the injury isn’t serious. However, Chelsea’s medical team hasn’t given more details before halftime.

Estêvão joined from Palmeiras in the summer. He came off the bench in last week’s draw. Now, he got his first full Chelsea start since Palmer is out. The Brazilian brought new energy to Chelsea’s attack early in the match. They aimed for their first win of the 2025–26 season.

Chelsea will host Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday. This match is for the Carabao Cup third round. They will keep a close eye on Palmer’s availability.
