Nationals Rally Past Phillies 9–3 in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, August 22, 2025 - The Washington Nationals beat the first-place Phillies 9–3. This marks the Phillies’ second loss in a row at Citizens Bank Park.
Washington scored eight runs in the second inning. They took advantage of timely hits and some mistakes by Philadelphia. This gave them an early lead. Key plays included run-scoring singles that drove out starter Taijuan Walker. There were also a few defensive errors that prolonged the inning.
Philadelphia got a two-run double in the third and another run in the fifth. But the Nationals added an insurance run in the eighth to keep a nice lead. Cade Cavalli, the starter for Washington, and the bullpen held the Phillies in check after a tough second inning. They kept the six-run lead safe until the end.
With the win, Washington snapped its four-game losing skid, improving to 53–75 on the season. Philadelphia’s record is now 74–54. It stays in first place in the NL East by a slim margin, even after losing two games at home.
Up Next – Nationals: Off day Saturday, then at New York Mets on Sunday. – Phillies: Resume series Sunday afternoon at home against Washington.
