Explosion at Roseland Auto Parts Supplier Triggers Evacuations

ROSELAND, La. (Aug. 22, 2025) – A strong explosion occurred at Smitty’s Supply, an auto parts store on U.S. Highway 51, around 12:53 p.m. Friday. The blast created a large cloud of dark smoke. As a result, residents and a nearby elementary school had to evacuate within a mile of the site.

Local authorities, like the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, urged everyone in the area between Highways 51 and 10 to “relocate IMMEDIATELY.” They asked people to stay away until further notice. This message went out through social media and emergency alerts. No injuries have been reported.

The Tangipahoa Parish School System sent buses to move students from Roseland Elementary. The school is about 4,000 feet from the explosion. The buses took them to the Parish School Board offices in Amite City, roughly three miles away. Parents should pick up their kids at that spot. If they had no other place to go, they could stay at the Amite Community Center.

State and local agencies, including the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, are still present. They are keeping an eye on air quality. Highway 51 is closed where it meets Highway 10. Crews are cleaning up and investigating the area. Governor Jeff Landry announced on X, “We are keeping a close eye on this situation." Please adhere to the directions of local authorities. We are praying for everyone’s safety”.

Smitty’s Supply began in 1969. It now has over 450 workers in multiple states. The company focuses on high-performance lubricants and automotive fluids. The cause of Friday’s explosion is still being looked into by local fire marshals and state environmental officials. Emergency responders warn residents to stay away until the area is safe.
