Multiple Dead and Dozens Injured in Western New York Tour Bus Crash

Pembroke, N.Y., August 22, 2025 - A tour bus with 51 passengers flipped over Friday afternoon. It was returning to New York City from Niagara Falls when it veered off Interstate 90 near Pembroke. Multiple people, including children, were killed, and many others were injured, according to state police and local officials.

The bus sped eastbound, lost control, and crossed the highway median. It then plunged into a ditch on the right shoulder, said Trooper James O’Callahan of the New York State Police. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Emergency crews, including at least six medical helicopters, responded to the scene. Translators have been called in to help. Many passengers are of Indian, Chinese, or Filipino descent. The Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo received at least eight injured patients. Their injuries ranged from severe head trauma to internal damage and fractures. Other victims were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester and other nearby locations.

Governor Kathy Hochul labeled the incident “tragic” on X. She added that first responders are “working to rescue and help everyone involved.” Senator Chuck Schumer expressed his condolences, calling it a “heartbreaking” event. He also praised the emergency personnel for their efforts on site.

State police continue to investigate the cause of the crash. Trooper O’Callahan said that talking to the surviving driver and looking at the scene helped authorities get “a good idea” of how control was lost. Still, they haven’t shared the specific details. The eastbound lanes near the crash site are closed. Crews are clearing debris, and investigators are at work.
