Chargers vs. 49ers Preseason Finale Ends in 6–6 Stalemate

SANTA CLARA, CA (Aug. 24, 2025) - Saturday night’s preseason finale at Levi’s® Stadium ended in a 6–6 tie. The game featured a tough defensive struggle between the Los Angeles Chargers and the San Francisco 49ers.
The Chargers took the lead on their first drive with a smooth play-action bootleg. Quarterback Justin Herbert rolled right and threw a deep pass to the end zone. DeAndre Carter caught it for a 24-yard touchdown, giving them a 6–0 lead. The Chargers’ offense stalled after that. They had good field position but turned two chances into punts instead of points.
In the second quarter, rookie kicker Cameron Dicker kicked a 47-yard field goal for Los Angeles. This gave the visitors a 3–0 lead before halftime. Early in the third quarter, he nailed a second field goal from about 46 yards. This put the Chargers ahead 6–0.
San Francisco’s offense struggled in the first half. But early in the second quarter, the 49ers put together a drive. It stalled inside the red zone. To avoid a turnover, head coach Kyle Shanahan brought out his field-goal unit. Rookie kicker Robbie Gould, signed in training camp, made a narrow 42-yard kick. This brought the score to 6–3.
Neither team’s starters saw second-half action, and both defenses stiffened. The 49ers had one last chance to score late in the third quarter. They moved into Chargers territory with backup quarterback Trey Lance. However, they had to settle for a Robbie Gould field goal from 40 yards. This tied the score at 6–6. Neither side could mount a fourth-quarter drive of note, and the game ended in a deadlock.
Injuries kept most regulars out, making Saturday’s draw a crucial tryout for fringe players and special-teams performers. The Chargers and 49ers are getting ready for Week 1. The Los Angeles team will play the Seattle Seahawks on September 7. Meanwhile, San Francisco will host the Minnesota Vikings on that same day.
