Detroit Lions Shut Out in Preseason Finale by Texans, Lose 3-0

Detroit, MI – In their last game before cuts, the Detroit Lions lost to the Houston Texans, 3–0, at Ford Field on Saturday.
A 53-yard field goal by Texans kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn in the first quarter proved to be the game’s only points. Fairbairn kicked on Houston’s first drive. The Lions gave up good field position. Detroit couldn’t build any strong drives against a defense that dominated in the red zone.
Quarterback Jared Goff had one series. He went 3 for 3, throwing for 18 yards. Still, the Texans’ tough defense held him back. On the ground, running backs Craig Reynolds and Jahmyr Gibbs gained only four rushing yards on three carries. They were stopped time and again by Houston’s defensive line. Wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson had Detroit’s biggest play, grabbing a 24-yard pass. Sadly, the Lions didn’t capitalize on it.
Head coach Dan Campbell felt the pain of the shutout. But, he was more focused on the roster decisions due by Tuesday’s 53-man cut deadline. ““Our guys fought, but we’ve got to find playmakers who can finish drives,” Campbell said. Campbell said this weekend’s performances will be crucial for evaluating special teams and backup roles.
Now that the preseason is over, Detroit will trim the roster. They’re also gearing up for the regular-season opener on September 8 against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Lions will announce their final 53-man roster on Tuesday afternoon. They aim to improve depth at running back, the offensive line, and special teams coverage.
