‘‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Cancelled; Focus Shifts to ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Season 2 Writers Room

Los Angeles, CA (August 23, 2025) – Paramount has shocked fans by cancelling the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin after only one season. This reverses the renewal announcement made back in April. The decision is part of a larger content review. This follows the Skydance–Paramount merger and new leadership at Showtime’s parent network.
Despite strong reviews—Original Sin has a 94 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes—and a loyal fanbase, the prequel won’t have a second season. Sources show that a renewal came six weeks after the series wrapped up in February. Still, no production dates or scripts were ever created.
Paramount’s new team, under Matt Thunell, is focusing on Dexter: Resurrection. Michael C. Hall returns as the serial killer in today’s New York. A writers room for a possible Season 2 of Resurrection is about to open. This means the network wants to keep growing the Dexter franchise with its original lead character, rather than going back to his beginnings.
Dexter: Original Sin premiered on December 15, 2024. It featured Patrick Gibson as a young Dexter Morgan. Michael C. Hall provided the voiceover narration. The series followed Dexter’s early years in Miami. He learned to control his murderous urges with help from his father, Harry Morgan (Christian Slater). The prequel gained a lot of viewers on Paramount+ Premium and earned praise for its performances, particularly Gibson’s portrayal of the young sociopath. Still, it fell victim to shifts in Paramount’s content strategy.
