Kansas Football News - August 24, 2025

Lawrence, Kan. - After Saturday’s exciting season opener, Kansas Football hit the field again Sunday. It was their first full practice of Week 1 under head coach Lance Leipold. The Jayhawks focused on three main areas:

  1. Install Game Plan vs. Missouri State After a sold-out season opener at the renovated David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, Kansas is now focused on next Saturday’s home game against Missouri State. Offensive coordinator Jim Zebrowski started putting in run-block schemes. These are meant to use the Jayhawks’ stronger offensive line depth. Meanwhile, defensive coordinator Bret Miller focused on refining coverage packages in the secondary.
  2. **Quarterback Health and Rotation** Jalon Daniels threw for 212 yards and two touchdowns against Fresno State. He took all the first-team reps in Sunday’s practice. Backup quarterback Beckett Dennis rotated with the second team, focusing on quick-game timing. Leipold praised Daniels for bouncing back from minor soreness. He said, “Jalon is sharp and ready to build on what we started.”
  3. Newcomers Make Early Impressions True freshmen tight end Tate Nagy and kicker Dane Efird took part in special teams drills. Nagy displayed the quickness that got him the punt-return role in the first depth chart. Alabama transfer safety Jahlil Hurley got a lot of reps with veteran starters in secondary drills. This helps Coach Miller with his rotation plans.

Next Steps. The Jayhawks will meet again on Monday for a light walkthrough. Then, they will move to full pads on Tuesday. Kansas opens Big 12 play at home versus Missouri State on Saturday, August 30, kickoff set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
