Warner Bros. Announces Kobe Bryant Draft-Day Biopic as Family Shares Rare Birthday Photos

Los Angeles, Aug. 23, 2025 - Warner Bros. Pictures announced a film about Kobe Bryant’s NBA draft journey. Also, his sister shared unseen birthday photos to celebrate what would have been his 47th birthday.

Warner Bros. has picked up the spec script *With the 8th Pick*. Written by Alex Sohn and Gavin Johannsen, it focuses on the twists of the 1996 NBA Draft. Bryant nearly went to the New Jersey Nets but ended up with the Charlotte Hornets. He was quickly traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. The studio aims to tell a high-stakes drama. It will dive into the negotiations, personal stakes, and office politics that defined one of basketball’s key nights.

“With the 8th Pick isn’t just a sports movie. It’s a draft-day thriller that shows how one choice can change everything,” said an insider familiar with the project. Producers Tim and Trevor White, famous for King Richard, are working with Gotham Chopra and Ryan Stowell from Religion of Sports. No director or cast has yet been announced.

On social media, Sharia Washington, Bryant’s sister, honored his birthday. She posted four touching photos that captured his life from childhood to NBA fame. She wrote a heartfelt message: “You are loved.” You are missed. Happy 47th birthday, Bean!”. The images, along with Washington’s comments on Bryant’s “responsibility for how people remember you,” led to a wave of tributes from fans and peers.

These two tributes—one from Hollywood and the other from family—highlight Kobe Bryant’s rich legacy. He was not just an athlete; he was also an inspiration. His impact still echoes in sports and culture today.
