India’s Plan to Translocate Asiatic Lions to Kuno National Park Likely Shelved
Bhopal – A forest department notice from July 30 hints that the plan to move Asiatic lions from Gujarat’s Gir sanctuary to Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park could be postponed. The emphasis may now be on bringing back cheetahs instead. The notification renames the “Lion Project” in Kuno to the “Cheetah Project.” No posts are cut, but roles will change, as noted by an additional chief secretary. Conservationists are concerned that changing priorities could put the lion translocation plan on hold. This might affect genetic diversity and hinder the range expansion of the vulnerable Asiatic lion population.
