Arsenal Teenager Max Dowman Named on Premier League Bench

LONDON, August 23, 2025 – Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has made history today. He included 15-year-old academy midfielder Max Dowman in the squad for the Premier League match against Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium.
Dowman, born on December 31, 2009, is the youngest player ever named as an Arsenal substitute. If he plays, he could become the second-youngest to appear for the Gunners in league games. The England Under-17 international got a spot on the bench by standing out in pre-season games against AC Milan and Newcastle United. He also trained hard with the first team.
Dowman quickly moved up Arsenal’s youth ranks. He debuted for the Under-18s at just 13. At 14, he scored in the UEFA Youth League. Last December, he became the youngest-ever Premier League 2 player. Arteta included the teenager in today’s 20-man squad. Last season, eligibility rules held him back. However, his training and friendly performances won Arteta over.
Reflecting on Dowman’s inclusion, Arteta said, “Max is an exceptional talent. He has shown maturity beyond his years and trained with the energy and focus we demand at this club. We’re excited to see how he continues to develop.”
Declan Rice, a former England midfielder, has guided Dowman in the senior team. He warned against overhyping the young player. He said, “Being the best 15-year-old doesn’t guarantee success at 18.” He needs to stay grounded, keep working, and maintain support from his family.” Ashley Cole has urged patience. He warned that too much pressure on young players can harm their growth in the long run.
Arsenal faces Leeds at 3 p.m. BST. Dowman is set to make his senior debut if Arteta chooses to bring him off the bench.
