Rookie QB Riley Leonard Shines in First NFL Start During Colts’ Preseason Finale

Indianapolis, OH - In his first pro start, rookie quarterback Riley Leonard guided the Indianapolis Colts in a lively first half against the Cincinnati Bengals. This game took place at Paycor Stadium on Saturday, August 23, 2025.
Leonard, a sixth-round pick from Notre Dame, stepped onto the field with the starters out. He quickly showed his calmness and ability to make plays. Midway through the first half, Leonard set up a drive that finished with a 59-yard pass to Laquon Treadwell. This score put Indianapolis on the board and showed off Leonard’s strong arm and accuracy on deep throws.
Leonard didn’t throw a deep pass until late in the half. Still, he played well. He combined precise short passes with smart runs. This kept the Bengals’ defense guessing. The rookie ended the half by completing 8 of 12 passes for 124 yards. This included a long touchdown. He also rushed for 18 yards on four carries.
Head coach Shane Steichen highlighted Leonard’s calm approach and solid prep. He noted, “He managed the huddle like a vet.” You saw the arm talent on that 59-yard play, but more importantly he executed our game plan”.
Indianapolis struggled in the second half after Leonard left the game. But his tryout for the Week 1 backup spot showed he’s ready. Colts GM Chris Ballard said Leonard’s first-half play will strongly impact final roster choices before the regular season.
Next week, Leonard and the Colts will focus on final roster cuts. The quarterback battle is heating up. Leonard, veteran Daniel Jones, and second-year pro Anthony Richardson are all in the running. This competition is one of the most watched during training camp.
