UNLV Football Kicks Off Dan Mullen Era with Week 0 Opener

Las Vegas, Aug. 23, 2025 - The UNLV Rebels kicked off the Dan Mullen era today. They faced the Idaho State Bengals in a Week 0 season opener at Allegiant Stadium. This marks the earliest game in the program’s history.
On a clear day and in front of an excited home crowd, Mullen—hired this offseason to revive UNLV’s program—oversaw the Scarlet & Gray’s first game. They moved it up from Sept. 13 to avoid a clash with the Canelo Alvarez–Bud Crawford boxing match. The Rebels took the field, ranked in both the AP and Coaches’ preseason polls. They aimed to build on their momentum after five seasons of improving win totals.
Today’s game showcased UNLV’s new offense. It stars running back Jai’Den “Jet” Thomas. The quarterback battle features transfers Alex Orji from Michigan and Anthony Colandrea from Virginia. They faced an Idaho State defense that allowed only 5 sacks in 2024 but has few returning starters. Mullen didn’t name a clear starter before the game. He said both Orji and Colandrea will play as they compete for the starting role.
Idaho State, led by Cody Hawkins in his third season, was set to show off a fast, pass-heavy offense. Quarterback Jordan Cooke, who threw for 2,453 yards in 2023, redshirted most of last year due to injury. Bengals coach Hawkins highlighted key areas to work on: third downs, short-yardage plays, and special teams. These are crucial against a Mountain West team that often starts strong.
““We’ve prepared all summer for this challenge,” Hawkins said. ““Our guys are excited to see how they match up physically and mentally under the lights.”
Kickoff was at 1:03 p.m. PT (4:03 p.m. ET) on the Mountain West Network. TV coverage came from the Silver State Sports & Entertainment Network, while ESPN 1100 AM handled radio.
All eyes are on Allegiant Stadium. The Rebels aim to make a statement in Week 0. This game shows UNLV’s rising profile in college football.
