Alexandra Eala to Make Grand Slam Debut at US Open Today

NEW YORK, Aug. 24, 2025 - Filipina star Alexandra Eala makes her Grand Slam debut today. She will face 14th seed Clara Tauson in the first round of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
The 20-year-old is back from a shoulder injury that made her miss the Cincinnati Open. Now, she arrives in New York after a historic season. Earlier this year, Eala made history. She became the first Filipina to beat a top-10 player at the Miami Open. Then, she reached the semifinals of a WTA 1000 event and entered the WTA Top 100. She advanced to her first WTA final at Eastbourne. This was a big national milestone, even though she fell short in a dramatic championship match.
““I feel so fortunate to be here, especially coming back from an injury recently,” Eala said. ““I’m just happy to be healthy and fit to compete.” She added of her opponent: “Clara Tauson is a great player and it will be an exciting battle.”
Tauson, a seasoned Top-20 competitor, boasts a 33–17 win–loss record in 2025 and notable hard-court victories, including upsets over world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Świątek. Eala’s left-handed, aggressive baseline style will clash with Tauson’s powerful flat strokes and strong defense. This sets up an exciting match on the outdoor hard courts of Flushing Meadows.
Play starts at 7:50 p.m. local time on the Grandstand court. You can watch it live on ESPN networks and streaming platforms.
