Ben Shelton Cruises into US Open Second Round with Straight-Sets Win

NEW YORK (August 24, 2025) – American star Ben Shelton kicked off his 2025 U.S. Open with a strong win. He defeated Peruvian qualifier Ignacio Buse in straight sets, moving on to the second round.

Shelton, the sixth seed, played on Arthur Ashe Stadium at noon Eastern. He dominated Buse with his strong power and athleticism. Shelton won 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 in just under two hours. The 22-year-old had a strong debut at Arthur Ashe on Day 1. He fired 10 aces and converted five of six break points to win.

““It’s always a special feeling to win here,” Shelton said afterward. ““I came out determined to set the tone early, and I’m happy with the way I executed.”

The Jacksonville native wasted little time asserting control. He broke Buse’s serve in the fourth game of the first set with a strong return. Then, he held his serve easily, winning 75% of his first serves. In the second set, Shelton kept control from the baseline. He jumped to a 4-1 lead and wrapped up the set in just 28 minutes. The final set was more of the same, as he broke Buse twice to seal the match on his second match point.

Shelton’s win highlights his strong hard-court season. He also claimed his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto. He now faces Zhizhen Zhang from China in Round 2. The match is set for Tuesday afternoon at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

With this win, Shelton keeps American hopes alive for a men’s Grand Slam title. No U.S. man has won since Andy Roddick’s victory at the 2003 U.S. Open. He aims to keep his momentum going as he seeks his first major quarterfinal at Flushing Meadows.
