Eagles Acquire QB Sam Howell in Late-Sunday Trade

Philadelphia, PA - On Sunday, August 24, 2025, the Philadelphia Eagles added depth at quarterback by trading for Sam Howell from the Minnesota Vikings. The Eagles sent a sixth-round pick in 2026 to acquire Howell. The Vikings, meanwhile, got a fifth-round pick in 2026 and a seventh-round pick in 2027.

Howell, 24, enters Philadelphia’s fold as the presumed backup to franchise quarterback Jalen Hurts. The move is due to starter Tanner McKee’s finger injury. This injury will keep McKee out for at least the start of the regular season. Howell will slot in behind Hurts and ahead of McKee once he returns.

““This gives the Eagles a veteran option if needed,” Pelissero tweeted. He noted Howell’s 17 starts with Washington in 2023. He passed for 3,946 yards and had a 63.4 percent completion rate. His touchdown-to-interception ratio was 21 to 21.

Minnesota signed veteran quarterback Carson Wentz. He will back up J.J. McCarthy after Howell left. Wentz, 32, met with the Vikings over the weekend. After a workout, he agreed to terms. Now, Minnesota has a seasoned backup option.

The Eagles start their 2025 season on September 4, facing the Dallas Cowboys. Howell will serve as the key backup for Hurts.
