Taylor Fritz Cruises Past Emilio Nava to Reach US Open Second Round

New York, Aug. 24, 2025 – American No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz advanced to the second round of the US Open on Sunday with a commanding straight-sets victory over compatriot Emilio Nava. Fritz won 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 at Louis Armstrong Stadium. This victory gives him a 3-0 lead against Nava.

Fritz made it to his first Grand Slam final at Flushing Meadows last year. He fought back from an early service break to take the first set 7-5. He showed his strength by firing aces and controlling the game. He won the second set 6-2. In the third, Fritz’s improved return game paid dividends as he secured two breaks en route to the 6-3 clincher.

““I’m really happy with how I stayed focused today,” Fritz said after the match. ““Emilio has been playing well all summer. I followed my game plan and kept up the pressure on my forehand.”

With the win, Fritz moved closer to his first Grand Slam title. He also kept America’s hopes alive for ending a drought since Andy Roddick’s 2003 US Open victory. He will play the winner of Monday’s match. That match is between Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego and Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka. This will be in the second round.
