Anthony Michael Hall Reflects on Chevy Chase’s On-Set Teasing at Fan Expo Chicago

August 25, 2025, Chicago-Veteran actor Anthony Michael Hall fondly recalled a behind-the-scenes moment from the making of the 1983 comedy classic National Lampoon’s Vacation, revealing how his on-screen father, Chevy Chase, playfully mocked him during a recent cast reunion at Fan Expo Chicago.
During the panel, Hall, who was just 14 when he first filmed Vacation, explained that reshooting the film’s original ending six months later proved challenging due to a dramatic growth spurt. “Puberty hit me hard,” Hall said, noting he had “grown a foot taller and felt like a completely different person.” He added with a laugh, “Guess who immediately pointed that out and made me feel great about it on set?” - a clear nod to Chase’s trademark wit.
Hall went on to recount a memorable autograph Chase left him upon wrapping the film: ” ‘To Anthony, you’re a regular Robby Benson - no mas, no mas,‘” referencing the 1970s teen idol. Chase also quipped, ” ‘If you’re going blind, you’re doing it right,’” ensuring the banter would be etched in Hall’s memory.
Dana Barron, who originally portrayed Hall’s sister Audrey, joined in the reminiscence, expressing her affection for the Griswold family’s station wagon. She teased Hall about another on-set moment: “Remember how Chevy pointed out all the pimples on your face?” Despite the jests, Hall expressed only affection for his co-star. “That’s why I cherish being your son for 40 years,” he told Chase, concluding, “I love you”.
Since Vacation, Hall leveraged his youthful awkwardness into defining roles in John Hughes classics such as Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club, cementing his status as an iconic figure of 1980s cinema.
