Trump Threatens Christie with “Bridgegate” Probe

August 25, 2025 | Washington, D.C.
In a post on his Truth Social platform Sunday evening, former President Donald Trump suggested launching a fresh criminal investigation into ex-New Jersey Governor Chris Christie over the 2013 “Bridgegate” scandal, days after Christie publicly criticized Trump’s handling of Justice Department matters.
Trump’s message, posted shortly after Christie’s appearance on ABC News’s This Week, read: “Can anyone believe anything that Sloppy Chris says? Do you remember the way he lied about the dangerous and deadly closure of the George Washington Bridge in order to stay out of prison, at the same time sacrificing people who worked for him, including a young mother, who spent years trying to fight off the vicious charges against her. Chris refused to take responsibility for these criminal acts. For the sake of JUSTICE, perhaps we should start looking at that very serious situation again? NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW!”
Christie, a former U.S. attorney and two-term New Jersey governor, had used the Sunday interview to criticize Trump’s refusal to maintain a separation between criminal investigations and the executive branch. Addressing Trump’s recent FBI raid of former National Security Adviser John Bolton’s home and office, Christie charged that the president “sees himself as the person who gets to decide everything” and “absolutely rejects the idea that there should be separation between criminal investigations and the politically elected leader of the United States.”
Although Christie was never charged in the 2013 scandal-which saw two of his aides convicted (and later exonerated by the U.S. Supreme Court)-Trump’s post revived calls to revisit the George Washington Bridge lane closures that paralyzed Fort Lee, New Jersey, traffic for three days as alleged political retribution against a local mayor. Trump’s threat follows a pattern of using the Justice Department to target critics, most recently in his call for a probe of President Biden’s handling of classified documents and the investigation into John Bolton.
Christie has consistently denied any involvement in orchestrating the closures and has welcomed scrutiny of Trump’s own legal controversies. As of Monday evening, neither the Department of Justice nor Christie’s office had issued a response to Trump’s latest remarks.
