Mariners Rally Past Padres 10-5 to Clinch 2025 Vedder Cup Second Leg

SEATTLE (Aug. 26, 2025) - The Seattle Mariners broke open a tight ballgame with a five-run fifth inning and went on to defeat the San Diego Padres, 10-5, at T-Mobile Park on Tuesday to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the second leg of the inaugural Vedder Cup series.

Seattle struck first when Julio Rodríguez singled in the first inning, and J.P. Crawford delivered an RBI double in the third to make it 2-0. After both clubs traded solo runs in the fourth, the Mariners erupted for five runs in the fifth against Padres’ starter Dylan Cease, punctuated by a three-run double from Cal Raleigh that gave Seattle a 7-3 advantage.

The Mariners tacked on three more runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Eugenio Suárez and a two-run homer by Logan Gilbert in his first career multi-homer game, extending the lead to 10-3. San Diego added a run in the ninth, but Seattle closer Andrés Muñoz slammed the door with a strikeout to seal the victory.

With the win, the Mariners improve to 71-61 on the season, while the Padres fall to 74-58. Game 6 of the Vedder Cup series is scheduled for Wednesday at 1:10 p.m. PT, with Luis Castillo set to counter Michael King.
