Popyrin Cruises Past Ruusuvuori to Reach US Open Second Round

Alexei Popyrin overwhelmed Emil Ruusuvuori in straight sets to advance to the second round of the 2025 US Open at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday, defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-4, 7-6.

Playing on Court 5 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the 26-year-old Australian fired 19 aces to Ruusuvuori’s four, converting three of five break points while saving three break opportunities against his own serve. Popyrin’s powerful groundstrokes and aggressive serve dictated play from the outset, allowing him to secure the opening two sets with relative ease before fending off a late charge in the deciding tiebreak.

“I felt great out there today,” Popyrin said after the match. “My serve was on point, and I stayed composed when the momentum shifted in the third set.”

Ruusuvuori, contesting his first Grand Slam main draw match since returning from a mid-season break, showed flashes of resilience but was ultimately unable to find consistency against Popyrin’s heavy-hitting baseline game.

Popyrin will now face top-seeded Jannik Sinner in Wednesday’s second round. Sinner, the defending champion, opened his title defence with a routine first-round victory earlier in the day at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
