Birmingham Mayoral Election Update - August 27, 2025

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Yesterday, August 26, 2025, Birmingham voters cast ballots in the city’s nonpartisan mayoral contest. Incumbent Mayor Randall Woodfin led the field but fell short of the 50.1 percent threshold required to win outright. State Representative Juandalynn Givan placed second, setting the stage for a runoff election.

A runoff between Woodfin and Givan is scheduled for October 7, 2025, to determine Birmingham’s next mayor. Municipal elections in Alabama require a candidate to secure a majority of votes; failure to do so triggers the runoff provision.

Campaigns are now shifting focus to the head-to-head race in October. Both candidates have pledged to intensify voter outreach over the coming weeks as they vie for the city’s top office.
