Siegemund Stuns No. 20 Seed Shnaider in US Open Opener

New York, August 26, 2025 - In a tightly contested first-round encounter at the US Open, German veteran Laura Siegemund ousted Russian No. 20 seed Diana Shnaider 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3 on Tuesday evening at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Siegemund, ranked 52nd on the WTA tour, claimed the opening set in a tense tiebreak before Shnaider responded emphatically in set two, breaking serve twice to level the match. In the decider, Siegemund seized an early break and maintained her advantage, converting her third match point to secure a place in the second round.
Shnaider, 17th in the world, struggled to convert break opportunities in the final set and committed 14 unforced errors compared with Siegemund’s nine, tipping the balance in the latter stages. The Russian will exit New York with first-round points and prize money, while Siegemund advances to face the winner of the Zakharova-Avanesyan match.
