Mariners Clinch Inaugural Vedder Cup in 9-6 Victory

SEATTLE (August 26, 2025) - The Seattle Mariners secured the first-ever Vedder Cup with a dramatic 9-6 triumph over the San Diego Padres at T-Mobile Park on Monday night. The new rivalry trophy, named for Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder and fashioned as a playable Fender Telecaster guitar, was officially awarded to Seattle following the decisive win.

A five-run outburst in the fifth inning turned the tide after the Mariners fell behind 4-1 early. Cal Raleigh’s solo home run in the first inning marked his 50th of the season, making him the only Mariner besides Ken Griffey Jr. to reach the half-century mark. Seattle then erupted in the fifth, stringing together hits and capitalizing on Padres’ miscues to build a commanding 6-4 lead that they never relinquished.

“Getting this win and lifting that guitar means so much,” said catcher Cal Raleigh after the game. “It’s crazy to think Eddie Vedder designed this trophy-and that it plays like a real instrument. That makes it even more special for us”.

The Vedder Cup series, officially introduced by Major League Baseball in 2025 to honor Vedder’s ties to both Seattle and San Diego, supports the Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Partnership, a charity co-founded by Eddie and Jill Vedder. With this victory, the Mariners complete an unassailable 4-0 sweep of the season series, officially claiming the inaugural cup.
