Gunman’s Daytime Barrage in South Minneapolis Leaves One Dead, Six Injured

Minneapolis officials responded to a mass shooting in the city’s Phillips neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon, August 26, 2025, in which a high-velocity rifle was used to spray dozens of rounds at civilians, killing one person and wounding six others.
At approximately 1:28 p.m., officers from the Minneapolis Police Department were dispatched to the 2900 block of Clinton Avenue East, just behind Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, following reports of sustained gunfire. Witnesses described hearing upwards of 25 rounds discharged in quick succession. SkyFOX 9 footage showed more than 20 patrol units converging on the scene within minutes.
Police Chief Brian O’Hara characterized the incident as a “deeply troubling act of violence,” noting the weapon-a semi-automatic .223-caliber rifle-was more often associated with military use. ShotSpotter data corroborated the rapid sequence of shots, estimating at least 30 in total. Of the seven victims struck, one adult male was pronounced dead at the scene. Three of the six survivors were initially listed in critical condition but are now expected to recover.
Eyewitness accounts describe panic as students and pedestrians scattered for cover near the high school perimeter. A red Kia Sportage was observed fleeing immediately after the shooting; as of late Tuesday evening, no arrests have been made and investigators have not identified a clear motive or suspect. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been called in to assist with forensic analysis, and homicide detectives are leading the ongoing investigation.
Mayor Jacob Frey issued a statement condemning the “senseless midday attack” and pledged additional resources to combat gun violence in Minneapolis. Community leaders have called for a renewed focus on public safety measures near schools and public spaces, as the city continues to grapple with a surge in firearms-related incidents this summer.
City officials urged anyone with information to contact Minneapolis Crime Stoppers or submit tips anonymously via the department’s online portal. A reward of up to $10,000 has been offered for details leading to the suspect’s arrest.
