Thick Black Smoke Rises from Ogden Railyard Fire

OGDEN, Utah - A large fire erupted this afternoon in an Ogden railyard, sending a dense plume of black smoke visible for miles across the city.
Ogden Fire Department crews responded to reports of flames at the railyard near 21st Street around 1:00 p.m. Tuesday. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a substantial fire in a pile of plastic construction pipe stored on a rail spur. The blaze quickly intensified, producing towering smoke columns that could be seen from Interstate 15 and surrounding neighborhoods.
To minimize disruption for rail commuters, Utah Transit Authority activated a bus bridge for FrontRunner service between Ogden Central Station and Roy Station. Passengers were advised to expect delays of 10-20 minutes and to follow signage to temporary bus stops.
Firefighters employed multiple engine companies and aerial ladder trucks to contain the fire, while command staff established a safety perimeter around the rail yard. No injuries have been reported, and no nearby homes or businesses were threatened, according to department officials. The official cause remains under investigation.
Mayor Mike Caldwell commended the rapid response of Ogden Fire crews and urged residents to avoid the area to allow emergency personnel to operate safely. Crews remained on scene into the evening, conducting overhauls to extinguish remaining hotspots and ensure there is no risk of rekindling.
