The Onion Surpasses 53,000 Print Subscribers One Year After Print Revival

Chicago, August 26, 2025 - Today, The Onion celebrated the one-year anniversary of its revived print edition by announcing that its monthly newspaper has attracted over 53,000 subscribers nationwide. After ceasing its print publication in 2013, the satirical news outlet returned to newsstands and mailboxes in August 2024 under new ownership by Global Tetrahedron.
Jordan LaFlure, executive editor of The Onion, reflected on the unexpectedly robust performance of the print edition. “Our goal has long been to escape the pitfalls of digital-only revenue models, particularly banner advertising,” LaFlure said. “We’re thrilled that readers are voting with their wallets, choosing a tangible, dedicated space for our satire.”
Subscriber demographics show a slight skew toward male readers, with the largest age cohort between 35 and 44 years old. However, The Onion’s team reports growing interest from younger audiences as well, who appreciate the tactile experience of flipping through a print newspaper. LaFlure noted that reading satire in print “creates contrasts between adjacent jokes that amplify the humor, something social feeds simply can’t replicate.”
The return to print has also provided valuable insights for the broader media industry. LaFlure suggested that The Onion’s success demonstrates the importance of diversifying revenue streams and being bold in experimenting with traditional formats. “Not every brand can replicate our model,” he cautioned, “but the lesson is clear: resourcefulness and a willingness to embrace both old and new platforms can forge sustainable connections with audiences.”
