MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 27, 2025 -

An active shooter situation at Annunciation Catholic School and Church shook south Minneapolis Wednesday morning, marring the first week of classes at the pre-K through eighth-grade parish school.
According to Minneapolis Police, the first 911 call reporting gunfire at the combined church and school campus on the 500 block of West 54th Street came in at approximately 8:27 a.m., just minutes into an all-school Mass attended by students and faculty. Neighbors said they initially mistook the rapid series of shots for nearby construction work.
Governor Tim Walz tweeted shortly after 9 a.m. that he had “been briefed on a shooting at Annunciation Catholic School” and that the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and State Patrol were on scene. He offered prayers for the children and educators whose first week of school was “marred by this horrific act of violence”.
Mayor Jacob Frey also confirmed that the city’s emergency response team was activated, urging residents to give officers the space needed to secure the area. The FBI and ATF dispatched agents to assist Minneapolis Police in the unfolding investigation.
By midday, authorities had swept the buildings, evacuated all students and staff, and were conducting a systematic search for suspects. As of this report, no casualties or injuries have been officially confirmed, and no arrests have been announced. The investigation remains active, with law enforcement canvassing for witnesses and reviewing security footage.
Annunciation Catholic School, located at 525 W. 54th St., opened its doors to new and returning families this past Monday. Classes were canceled for the remainder of the day, and counselors were made available to help students and staff process the trauma of the incident. The Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis said it is cooperating fully with law enforcement and will share further updates as they become available.
Authorities ask anyone with information or video from the area between 8 and 9 a.m. to contact the Minneapolis Police Department tip line.
The story is developing; further details will be released by school officials and the Minneapolis Police Department as the investigation continues.
