Charlie Hunnam Unveiled as Ed Gein in Netflix’s “Monster” Season 3 with October Premiere

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 27, 2025 - Netflix today revealed first-look images and set the release date for the third installment of its true-crime anthology series Monster, starring Charlie Hunnam as notorious serial killer Ed Gein. The streamer announced that Monster: The Ed Gein Story will premiere globally on Oct. 3, with all eight episodes available at once, promising its “most chilling season yet”.

In newly released posters, Hunnam undergoes a dramatic transformation into Gein, the mid-century Wisconsin recluse whose exhumations and gruesome trophies inspired Hollywood horror icons from Psycho to The Silence of the Lambs. According to Netflix’s official synopsis, Gein was “a gentle, introverted man” driven by “isolation, psychosis, and an all-consuming fixation on his mother,” whose grotesque offenses “gave rise to a new kind of monster that would haunt Hollywood for decades”.

Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, Monster’s prior seasons explored Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez brothers. Season 3 reunites the duo with Hunnam, who is joined by Laurie Metcalf as Gein’s mother Augusta, Tom Hollander as Alfred Hitchcock, Olivia Williams as Alma Reville, and Suzanna Son in an undisclosed role. Murphy described this chapter as a deeper dive into how “monsters aren’t born; they’re created…by us,” underscoring the anthology’s commentary on society’s role in crafting true-crime legend.

The announcement follows widespread fan and critical anticipation after glimpses of Hunnam’s painstaking makeup and period costumes surfaced on social media earlier this week. With Season 3 slated for the height of “spooky season,” Netflix aims to capitalize on renewed interest in horror rooted in real-life depravity.

Production credits include executive producers Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, and Hunnam himself alongside seasoned television producers. All episodes of Monster: The Ed Gein Story will be available on Netflix beginning October 3.
