Breaking News: Mass Shooting at South Minneapolis Catholic School

Minneapolis, MN - On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, a mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in south Minneapolis left 20 victims and the alleged shooter dead, authorities and 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS (KSTP) report.
Shortly after classes began on the first week of school, multiple law enforcement agencies-including Minneapolis Police and the ATF-descended on the campus near West 54th Street and Lyndale Avenue South following reports of gunfire. By mid-morning, officers had confirmed 20 individuals had been struck by gunfire; several are in critical condition, while others sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The suspected gunman was found deceased at the scene.
Governor Tim Walz, who said he was briefed by law enforcement “within minutes” of the incident, offered prayers for the students and staff affected by “this horrific act of violence.” He vowed to work with local officials to ensure all necessary resources are provided to the victims and their families.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes as students evacuated classrooms under the direction of teachers, some seeking shelter in nearby Annunciation Catholic Church. The school, which resumed classes this week after summer break, hosted an 8:15 a.m. Mass across the street shortly before the shooting.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara praised first responders for their rapid intervention, noting their actions likely prevented further loss of life. He also urged anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers or submit tips online.
This marks the fourth deadly shooting in Minneapolis over the past 24 hours. Police are investigating possible connections among these incidents but have not yet confirmed any links.
