Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey Calls Special Council Meeting and Addresses School Shooting

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 27, 2025 - Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey today convened a special City Council session to consider legal action against the owner of a commercial parking lot on East Lake Street who has been hosting a large homeless encampment on private property. In a statement, Frey’s office noted that public health notices have been issued due to hazardous debris, drug paraphernalia and unsanitary conditions, and that shelter and services offered by city teams have been largely declined by residents at the site.

Earlier Wednesday, Frey also took to social media to address the tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in south Minneapolis, where two children were killed and multiple others injured during morning mass. He said the city’s emergency response team has been activated and that he is in close contact with Police Chief Brian O’Hara as authorities work to secure the scene and support victims and families.
