Drummond and Cheriogotis Advance to Runoff in Mobile Mayoral Race

MOBILE, Ala.-Unofficial results from the August 26 general election confirm that State Representative Barbara Drummond and former Mobile County District Judge Spiro Cheriogotis will face off in a runoff for mayor of Mobile, as neither secured the majority needed to win outright.
Drummond topped a field of four candidates, while Cheriogotis placed second; former Mobile County Commissioner Connie Hudson and ex-Police Chief Paul Prine fell short of advancing. With no candidate exceeding 50 percent of the vote, the runoff is scheduled for September 23.
Drummond’s campaign emphasized its grassroots momentum, noting that her first-place finish reflects broad support among working families and young leaders. Cheriogotis, endorsed by outgoing Mayor Sandy Stimpson, is rallying supporters around his vision for continuity and collaboration in city government.
Voter turnout was moderate, reflecting strong interest in choosing a successor to Mayor Sandy Stimpson, who did not seek reëlection after three terms. The runoff campaign is expected to intensify as both candidates vie for endorsements and build coalitions across Mobile’s diverse neighborhoods.
The September 23 election will determine who leads Alabama’s largest city, with key issues including public safety, economic development, infrastructure investment, and neighborhood revitalization at the forefront of both campaigns.
