Alex Garland, acclaimed director of Ex Machina and Annihilation, deployed an extraordinary pitch to win approval from Elden Ring creator Hidetaka Miyazaki, securing development of the highly anticipated live-action adaptation at A24. Garland not only wrote a 160-page spec script but also compiled 40 pages of bespoke visual imagery to demonstrate his deep understanding of the game’s dark fantasy world.
In a recent profile by The New Yorker, A24’s head of film Noah Sacco recounted traveling to Japan alongside Garland to finalize the deal with FromSoftware and Bandai Namco Entertainment. The partnership names Garland as both screenwriter and director, with producers including Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, George R.R. Martin, and Vince Gerardis.
The film, announced in May 2025, marks A24’s second major video game adaptation following its upcoming Death Stranding project. Production is slated to begin in January 2026, with shooting locations set across the United Kingdom and Canada, and is expected to wrap by mid-2026.
Garland’s immersive approach-playing multiple game playthroughs and articulating his vision through detailed script and art-underscores the studio’s confidence in honoring the source material while delivering a cinematic experience worthy of its celebrated lineage.
