AMTRAK’S NEXTGEN ACELA TRAINS LAUNCH INTO SERVICE

WASHINGTON, D.C., August 28, 2025 - In a milestone for U.S. passenger rail, Amtrak today inaugurated revenue service of its new NextGen Acela high-speed trains on the Northeast Corridor between Washington, D.C., New York City, and Boston. The first five trainsets departed Union Station at 5:00 a.m. ET en route to Boston, marking the debut of America’s most modern intercity rail equipment in 25 years.

Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy joined Amtrak President Roger Harris and Board Chair Anthony Coscia for a ceremonial “Acela-bration” at Washington’s Union Station. “They’re stunning. They’re going to be quicker,” Duffy remarked following a preview ride from Washington to New York City, noting the trains’ top speed of 160 mph-a 10 mph increase over the current fleet.

The NextGen Acela fleet offers a 27 percent increase in seating capacity, complimentary 5G-enabled Wi-Fi, individual power outlets, reading lights, and enhanced café service featuring fresh, high-quality food and beverages. Amtrak will operate both legacy Acela and NextGen trains during the transition, ramping up to all five initial trainsets today and phasing in an additional 23 through 2027.

“This marks a new era of American-made high-speed rail,” said Amtrak President Roger Harris. “Our NextGen Acela sets a new standard for comfort, reliability, and service on the Northeast Corridor, supporting more seats, more trains, and expanded schedules for business and leisure travelers alike”.

Passengers can book NextGen Acela service via Amtrak’s website and mobile app by looking for the distinctive “NextGen” tag or selecting specific train numbers, including weekday routes 2153, 2154, 2170, and 2173. Amtrak anticipates that the modernized fleet will boost ridership and revenue on its only profitable corridor, while showcasing the resurgence of rail innovation in the United States.
