Ben Shelton Storms into US Open Third Round with Straight-Sets Victory

NEW YORK (August 28, 2025) - American sixth seed Ben Shelton continued his impressive run at the US Open by overpowering Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 on Thursday night to secure a spot in the third round.

Shelton, who clipped 42 winners and broke Carreno Busta’s serve five times, dominated from start to finish inside Louis Armstrong Stadium, feeding off what he described as an “electric atmosphere” provided by the New York crowd.

“It feels like home,” Shelton said in his on-court interview. “This is the one tournament that is all about the fans, the energy, the passion for the sport”.

The 22-year-old Floridian, who rose to a career-high No. 5 in the ATP live rankings earlier this week, will next face French veteran Adrian Mannarino for a place in the round of 16.

Late in the evening session, Shelton was playfully ambushed at his press conference by girlfriend Trinity Rodman, the U.S. Women’s National Team forward, who quipped about his serve speed after noticing it failed to surpass 140 mph. “It was cold outside, so I was focused on hitting spots and didn’t get there,” Shelton laughed as he vowed to “serve bigger” in future matches.

With his commanding performance and fan-fuelled confidence, Shelton solidifies his reputation as one of the most exciting young talents on tour as the US Open heads into its second week.
