Active Shooter Reported Near Emporia State University Campus

Emporia, Kan. - Emporia State University (ESU) issued an urgent campus alert at 4:40 p.m. on Thursday after reports of an active shooter at Newman Regional Health in Emporia.
According to the university’s official X account, anyone in the vicinity was instructed to “Run. Hide. Fight.” and those off campus were advised to “remain away.” ESU suspended all off-campus activities until further notice.
Tonight’s home opener for the Hornets football team against Minot State, scheduled for 7 p.m. at Welch Stadium, has not been officially canceled, but attendees were warned to stay informed via ESU’s emergency notification system.
Local law enforcement and campus police have mobilized to secure the area around the medical center. ESU is working closely with the Emporia Police Department and Kansas Highway Patrol to verify the threat and ensure student and public safety.
Anyone with information is urged to contact campus police at (620) 341-5333 or local emergency services. Updates will be posted on the university’s website and official social media channels as more details become available.
