JCPenney Confirms Eight Store Closures by Mid-2025

August 28, 2025 | New York
JCPenney today reiterated plans to shutter eight underperforming department-store locations by mid-2025, citing expiring leases and shifting consumer shopping habits. A company spokesperson emphasized that these isolated closures are part of Catalyst Brands’ broader efforts to optimize its brick-and-mortar footprint while investing in higher-traffic markets.
The eight stores slated to close are:
- The Shops at Tanforan, San Bruno, California
- The Shops at Northfield, Denver, Colorado
- Pine Ridge Mall, Pocatello, Idaho
- West Ridge Mall, Topeka, Kansas
- Fox Run Mall, Newington, New Hampshire
- Asheville Mall, Asheville, North Carolina
- Charleston Town Center, Charleston, West Virginia
- Westfield Annapolis Mall, Annapolis, Maryland
Affected employees will be offered transfers to nearby JCPenney locations where possible, and clearance sales have already begun at the first three sites. Despite ongoing store closures, JCPenney continues to operate approximately 640 stores nationwide under Catalyst Brands, focusing on enhanced in-store experiences and expanded private-brand offerings.
