Lincoln Tunnel Helix Lane Closure Amid Crash Investigation Disrupts Morning Commute

August 28, 2025 - NEW YORK CITY A crash investigation on the Lincoln Tunnel’s helix forced the closure of multiple lanes Thursday morning, snarling traffic for inbound commuters. Emergency responders remain on scene as Port Authority officials work to clear the incident.
Helix Closure and Traffic Impact Port Authority crews closed two of three eastbound lanes on the helix leading into the Lincoln Tunnel after responding to a crash. With only one lane open, vehicles were funneled through at reduced speed, resulting in significant slowdowns on Route 495 approaching the tunnel entrance.
Alternate Routes Recommended Motorists were advised to allow extra travel time or to consider alternative crossings, including the Holland Tunnel or the George Washington Bridge. Southbound I-95 between Park Avenue and the tunnel toll plaza also experienced lane restrictions and delays, exacerbating congestion in the area.
Surface Road Delays Further west, construction on I-95 at Exit 16 (North Avenue) reduced available lanes, contributing to backups. Meanwhile, the Hutchinson River Parkway shifted from moderate (orange) to heavy (red) congestion levels as the morning rush intensified.
Transit Options Unaffected Commuters opting for public transit faced no disruptions: Metro-North, NJ Transit rail, and PATH trains continued operating on schedule, and ferry services remained unaffected by the tunnel incident.
Authorities urge drivers to monitor real-time traffic updates and to plan for potential delays throughout the morning commute. Emergency personnel have not released further details on the cause of the crash investigation.
