Ohio University Announces Suspension and Merger of Degree Programs to Comply with New State Law

ATHENS, Ohio (August 28, 2025) - In response to the requirements of Ohio’s recently enacted Senate Bill 1 (the Advance Ohio Higher Education Act), Ohio University submitted a proposal today to the Ohio Department of Higher Education to suspend future entry into 11 undergraduate degree programs and merge 18 others.

Under SB 1, public universities must discontinue programs that averaged fewer than five bachelor’s degree conferrals per year over the past three years. Ohio University’s submission lists the following programs for suspension of new admissions:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry (will continue offering a Bachelor of Science)
  • Bachelor of Arts in Geological Sciences (will continue offering a Bachelor of Science)
  • Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics (will continue offering a Bachelor of Science)
  • Bachelor of Arts in Physics (will continue offering a Bachelor of Science)
  • Associate of Applied Science in Electronic Media
  • Associate of Applied Science in Equine Studies
  • Bachelor of Science in Education in Family and Consumer Sciences Education in Teaching
  • Associate of Applied Science in Child Development
  • Associate of Applied Science in Aviation Flight Technology
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts
  • Associate of Individualized Studies

An additional 18 programs, primarily within geography, music, and arts disciplines, are proposed for merger with similar offerings. Ohio University has also requested waivers to continue seven unique or workforce-aligned programs, including Economics, Dance, and Music Therapy.

University officials emphasize that current students enrolled in affected programs may complete their degrees under existing requirements. The Ohio Department of Higher Education will review Ohio University’s plan at a future meeting.
