CDC Investigates Multistate Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Recalled Eggs

August 28, 2025-The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), alongside the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state health authorities, is probing a multistate Salmonella outbreak tied to contaminated eggs produced by Country Eggs LLC. As of Thursday, at least 95 people across 14 states have fallen ill, and 18 have required hospitalization; no fatalities have been reported so far.
In response, Country Eggs LLC of Lucerne Valley, California, voluntarily recalled its large brown cage-free eggs marketed under the brand names Nagatoshi Produce, Misuho, and Nijiya Markets. The recall covers cartons bearing the code CA-7695 with sell-by dates from July 1 through September 16, 2025. These products were distributed to retail outlets and food-service providers in California and Nevada.
Health officials report cases from Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Washington, among others, with California accounting for the highest number of infections. Symptoms-typically manifesting within 12 to 72 hours after exposure-include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. While most healthy individuals recover without treatment, young children, seniors, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems face heightened risks of severe illness.
Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled eggs are urged to discard them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Anyone experiencing symptoms consistent with salmonellosis should seek medical attention and inform healthcare providers about potential exposure to recalled eggs.
The FDA has suspended production of the implicated products and continues working with Country Eggs LLC to determine the contamination’s source and prevent further cases. The CDC cautions that the outbreak may be more widespread than currently reported, as many infections go undiagnosed.
