Shrewsbury Residents Urged to Shelter in Place Amid Armed Suspect Search

SHREWSBURY, Mass. - On Thursday morning, law enforcement launched a large-scale manhunt in the Jordan Pond, Edgewater Avenue, and Plainfield Avenue neighborhoods after reports of a shooting and an armed suspect on the loose. Residents in the affected area were advised to remain indoors and avoid travel until the situation was resolved.
According to emergency alerts received around 9:16 a.m., a shooting was reported near Jordan Pond, prompting authorities to secure the nearby Calvin Coolidge Elementary School campus as a precautionary measure. School officials confirmed that the incident was not school-related and that all students and staff remained safe throughout the lockdown.
Shrewsbury Police Department, aided by state troopers, canine units, and aerial support, established a heavy presence in the search zone. In a Facebook post at 9:49 a.m., the department warned: “We have a large law enforcement presence in the Jordan Pond/Edgewater Ave/Plainfield Ave area searching for an armed and dangerous suspect. Please avoid the area, and if you find yourself nearby, shelter in place”.
Superintendent Joe Sawyer of Shrewsbury Public Schools reiterated that no other schools were affected and urged parents not to contact campuses or remove students early. He also noted that buses carrying Coolidge students who had not yet reached the campus were redirected to Beal School for safety.
As of early afternoon, no further details had been released regarding the suspect’s identity, motive, or the condition of any victims. The search continued into Thursday afternoon, with updates expected later from the Shrewsbury Police Department and school officials.
