“The Thursday Murder Club” Film Premieres on Netflix Today

LONDON, Aug. 28, 2025 - Netflix releases the much-anticipated film adaptation of Richard Osman’s bestselling Thursday Murder Club series today, bringing amateur sleuths Elizabeth, Ron, Ibrahim and Joyce to screens worldwide. Directed by Chris Columbus and starring Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie, the film is available to stream starting at midnight Pacific Time (3 a.m. ET) and 9 a.m. CEST.

The cinematic debut follows four retirees living at Coopers Chase retirement community who turn their weekly murder-mystery discussions into a real investigation when a death occurs on their doorstep. After premiering in London’s Leicester Square on Aug. 21 and a limited theatrical run beginning Aug. 22, the film now reaches a global Netflix audience.

Early critical response has been mixed to positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, 75 percent of 48 reviews are favorable, underscoring praise for the cast’s chemistry and warm humor despite a sometimes simplistic mystery. Metacritic gives the film a weighted average score of 58 out of 100, reflecting a range of reactions from critics who commend the performances but note uneven pacing.

In a Variety interview published today, director Chris Columbus described his vision of Coopers Chase as “the Hogwarts of retirement communities,” emphasizing the film’s blend of whimsy and poignancy. He also hinted at potential sequels, saying, “If audiences embrace this, I’d love to film both second and third entries back-to-back”.

Industry analysts point to the film’s star power and built-in fanbase as key factors for its streaming success. Netflix’s Tudum blog released a first look earlier this month, highlighting the ensemble’s commitment to portraying the characters’ humanity and humor as they confront life, death and the enduring power of friendship.

“The Thursday Murder Club” is now streaming exclusively on Netflix.
