Trump Revokes Secret Service Protection for Former Vice President Kamala Harris

Washington, August 29, 2025 - President Donald Trump has rescinded the extended Secret Service detail for former Vice President Kamala Harris, effective September 1, according to a senior White House official.

Under federal law, former vice presidents are entitled to six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office. California officials criticized the move. Governor Gavin Newsom’s spokesperson, Bob Salladay, condemned the decision as “erratic, vindictive political impulses,” while Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass warned it “puts the former Vice President in danger” and pledged to work with state authorities to ensure her safety.

Context The decision follows a pattern of Mr. Trump revoking security details for several former officials, including former National Security Advisor John Bolton and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Ms. Harris is set to embark on a book tour in September to promote her upcoming memoir, 107 Days, which chronicles her 2024 presidential campaign.
