Fox News Anchor John Roberts Remains Hospitalized with Severe Malaria

August 29, 2025 - WASHINGTON, D.C. - Fox News Channel co-anchor John Roberts continues to recover in the hospital after being diagnosed with a severe case of malaria earlier this week.

Roberts, 68, fell ill shortly after returning from a two-week trip to Indonesia and was admitted on August 25 when blood tests revealed critically low platelet and white blood cell counts. “I had been hurting from the top of my head to the tip of my toes. Literally everywhere. I was also beset with uncontrolled shivering all during my show,” he told PEOPLE, noting that he initially mistook his symptoms for muscle cramps and flu-like chills.

Doctors at Inova Health administered IV artesunate-the first-line treatment for severe malaria in the United States-to combat the parasitic infection Roberts likely contracted through a mosquito bite abroad. He described “wild swings in temperature every hour,” from uncontrollable shivering to sudden bouts of sweating.

In a message on X, Roberts expressed gratitude to his colleagues for stepping in during his absence, specifically thanking fellow anchor Trace Gallagher for co-hosting America Reports alongside Sandra Smith. Roberts hopes to be discharged soon and aims to return to the broadcast desk on Tuesday, September 2, pending medical clearance.

Malaria is uncommon in the United States but remains endemic in tropical regions. The U.S. reports roughly 2,000 cases annually, almost all imported by travelers returning from affected areas. Severe cases, if left untreated, can lead to life-threatening complications such as kidney failure, neurological issues, and multi-organ dysfunction.
