Two Boone County Deputies Shot While Serving Warrant in Walton, Kentucky

WALTON, Ky., Aug. 29, 2025 - Two Boone County sheriff’s deputies were wounded late Thursday night in a shooting incident at the Towne Creek Crossing Apartments in Walton, authorities confirmed.

The deputies had arrived at the apartment complex, located behind the Kroger on Service Road, around 10:00 p.m. local time to serve a felony arrest warrant related to approximately $14,000 in unpaid child support. As they attempted to enter the residence, heavy gunfire erupted from inside, striking one deputy in the chest and the other in the leg. Both officers were wearing body armor and were transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center; one was airlifted, and the other taken by ambulance. Officials later described their conditions as stable, with at least one deputy having undergone surgery and expecting a full recovery.

Following the shooting, the suspect barricaded himself inside the apartment. SWAT teams deployed gas canisters in an attempt to end the standoff, while evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes around 1:00 a.m. Drone footage subsequently confirmed that the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No additional injuries were reported among deputies or residents, and authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

Boone County Sheriff Michael Helmig and Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge visited the hospital to lend support to the injured officers. Local law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, assisted in securing the scene, which saw one of the largest police responses the area has ever witnessed.
