Former Ukrainian Security Council Head Andriy Parubiy Shot Dead in Lviv

Lviv, August 30, 2025 - Andriy Parubiy, Ukraine’s former head of the National Security and Defense Council and ex-speaker of parliament, was shot dead in broad daylight in Lviv on Saturday, sparking a nationwide manhunt and presidential condemnation.
Andriy Parubiy was gunned down around midday in Lviv’s Frankivskyi district, where witnesses reported hearing eight shots before emergency services arrived; he was declared dead at the scene. The Lviv Regional Military Administration confirmed the victim’s identity as the 54-year-old former parliamentary speaker.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, informed of the “horrific murder” by Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, expressed condolences to Parubiy’s family and pledged that “all necessary resources and personnel have been mobilized for the investigation and search for the killer”.
Law enforcement sources cited by local media suggest the suspected assailant fled on an electric bicycle dressed as a delivery courier, and authorities have deployed specialized units across Lviv Oblast in pursuit of the suspect.
Parubiy, a veteran legislator and key figure in the 2014 Euromaidan Revolution, served as chairman of the Verkhovna Rada from 2016 to 2019. His assassination marks one of the most high-profile political killings in Ukraine since the full-scale Russian invasion began in 2022.
